Warsaw: prog with a metal heart

Riverside came together in Warsaw in 2001, when musicians with backgrounds in heavy metal discovered a shared love of progressive rock — the story goes, after hearing Marillion on a car radio. The classic line-up soon settled around singer-bassist Mariusz Duda, guitarist Piotr Grudziński, keyboardist Michał Łapaj and drummer Piotr Kozieradzki. Their 2003 debut “Out of Myself” launched the “Reality Dream” trilogy and announced a band of rare emotional depth, and over the following years Riverside grew into Poland’s most acclaimed progressive rock act.

Atmospheric and melancholic

Riverside’s music has often been described as “too heavy for art-rock and too delicate for progressive metal” — and that in-between space is exactly where their magic lies. From Out of Myself to ID.Entity

Riverside’s eight albums trace a rich, emotional journey. The “Reality Dream” trilogy of “Out of Myself” (2003), “Second Life Syndrome” (2005) and “Rapid Eye Movement” (2007) established their atmospheric sound, before the punchier “Anno Domini High Definition” (2009) topped the Polish charts. The warm, 70s-tinged “Shrine of New Generation Slaves” (2013) and the melodic “Love, Fear and the Time Machine” (2015) followed, the latter their last with Piotr Grudziński. After his death in 2016, the band continued as a trio for the elegiac “Wasteland” (2018), before “ID.Entity” (2023) opened a brighter new chapter.

The players

Riverside have always been led by Mariusz Duda — singer, bassist, principal songwriter and creative heart of the band. For its classic era he was joined by guitarist Piotr Grudziński, keyboardist Michał Łapaj and drummer Piotr Kozieradzki. The band suffered a profound loss in 2016 with the death of Grudziński, a founding member; they chose to carry on in his memory, first as a trio and later with guitarist Maciej Meller, who became a full member. Duda, who also records atmospheric solo music as Lunatic Soul, stepped away from Riverside in 2026 after some twenty-five years, leaving the band’s future uncertain.

Begin with “Second Life Syndrome” (2005), widely regarded as one of Riverside’s finest hours — expansive, atmospheric and emotionally rich.
